Project Description

THE HEART AND HOME OF KAPAYIM

Kapayim has revolutionized family care during serious illnesses by creating THE KAPAYIM CENTER – a headquarters that offers a supervised after-school haven for siblings called the Kapayim Cabin, and a sterile classroom for immunocompromised preschool children.  With closets brimming with colorful toys and activities, and quiet areas for homework completion, the Kapayim Center is what any child needs.

The Kapayim Cabin was created to offer a place for siblings to learn, play, relax and recharge until it is time to return home, while the classroom part of the Center was founded in order to provide children with serious illnesses the educational, social and developmental experiences they would not be able to receive because of their need for sterile conditions.

Kapayim’s fulltime preschool in Boro Park is the first of its kind in the world.  Because the classrooms at the Center are kept sterile, children undergoing chemotherapy or transplants can safely attend the preschool with other children, just like them, to learn, play and grow.

With the Center, Kapayim’s impact on all of these children is immeasurable.  They would ordinarily have to spend their lives shuttling between home, doctors’ offices or hospitals; or siblings would head home alone after school to an empty house. Because of the Kapayim Center, they finally have the opportunity to blossom and develop their potentials.

WHEN IS SCHOOL MORE THAN JUST A SCHOOL?

Walk down the hall of the Kapayim Center on an ordinary day and take a peek at the class in action. You will see, sense and hear what sets this school apart.

Each of these young children have endured more medical procedures,  have been hospitalized more hours and have more medical expertise than the average adult has in a lifetime.

Do not take this for granted.

  • This school is the only place where seriously ill children can be, other than stuck at home or at the hospital.

  • The Kapayim Center is the only place other than home where it is safe for these children to be children.

  • Children with many different medical conditions are smiling, playing and singing, and deep in conversation with their friends.  Despite their medical tubing, hidden ports and hair loss, all look normal and happy.

  • At Kapayim, they can imagine, create, socialize and play, every day that they are not in the hospital; 50 weeks each year; an ongoing intervention that brings stability and normalcy when all else is so uncertain.

  • Instead of needles and finger sticks, they create art and finger-painting.

  • Instead of loneliness and isolation, they enjoy friends and teachers.

  • Instead of learning about their test results, they learn parsha and ABCs.

  • Instead of fear and uncertainty, they escape in imaginary play and story time.

“My daughter had a heart transplant, and if you ask me how I coped, it was all Kapayim.   They don’t let you feel alone.  The Kapayim [sterile] Class is so special! My daughter’s social life and preschool skills were given the opportunity to grow.  The immunosuppressed kids are so behind and they really need school.  The days she doesn’t go, she literally stands at the window and waits. This is a necessity!”

According to the American Cancer Society, the average academic setback for pediatric cancer patients is two grades.  Kapayim is the only organization that fills this void.
