OUR MISSION

When a child or parent is diagnosed with a serious illness, the fear, dread and confusion are overwhelming. Millions of thoughts swirl through the minds of parents–the grueling treatments, the unknown results, and above all, “what will become of the rest of the family?”

  • Who will take my child to treatment on the days I work?

  • Who will greet my other children as they come off their school buses?

  • How will I keep on top of laundry, cooking, and cleaning if I am in the hospital every spare moment?

  • How can I be there for everyone in the family when my hospitalized child takes up my every waking moment?

  • Life was so busy before, how will this new and difficult challenge fit in?

Through thoughtful, researched-based, and direct interventions, Kapayim, Be’ezras Hashem, seeks to lessen the negative impact of cancer and other serious illnesses on the patient, siblings and the whole family unit.  Kapayim provides effective supports that are either Center-based, home based or hospital based in order to sustain the usual patterns of family and child functioning.

Its founders are people who have seen firsthand the critical effects of illness on a family. Their unique way of providing light and warmth comes from their main goal “על כפים ישאונך” “On the palms of hands you will be carried.”

Kapayim with the help of Hakodosh Baruch Hu carries the burden of mothers, fathers, and children of all ages with their support. Each family in need is offered a carefully designed, multi-faceted system of aid, allowing the traumatic impact of disease to fade, ultimately letting hope and relief prevail.

“Chemotherapy can bring a cure, but your work brings healing to our patients.”

Dr. Sarah R. Vaiselbuh MD• Director of the Children's Cancer Center at Staten Island University Hospital

THE KAPAYIM SOLUTION

When it comes to serious illness, Kapayim is there for the patient and the family– they become like family; a part of the family.   Since illness has the power to destroy the normal ebb and flow of life, Kapayim focuses on hope through help.

How?

With services provided:

  • At the hospital

  • At the patient’s home

  • At the Kapayim Center

COMPLETE AND TOTAL CARE IS OFFERED

HOSPITAL BASED

Trained members of the Kapayim network are carefully matched to their patients, and are scheduled on recurring shifts for the same patient which allows them time to bond at every visit.
Each volunteer arrives with carefully selected, researched activities to stimulate and occupy their patients. Whether it is a carnival in a bag, pizza makers, donut machines, art projects and creative custom crafts and activities, patients are riveted to the fascinating activities and forget their pain for a while.

HOME BASED

Meanwhile, in order to strengthen and solidify the foundation of a family, Kapayim sends carefully selected members of their network to cover shifts at patient homes to assist with parents, patients and siblings and maintain household routines, so that the trauma of the illness does not take its toll on the home atmosphere.  Meals, cleaning help, clothing shopping, private tutoring , groceries and help with bedtime are all part of what maintains home stability, and Kapayim provides these to families in need.

CENTER BASED

Kapayim has revolutionized family care during serious illnesses by creating THE KAPAYIM CENTER – a headquarters that offers a supervised after-school haven for siblings called the Kapayim Cabin, and a sterile classroom for immunocompromised preschool children. With closets brimming with colorful toys and activities, and quiet areas for homework completion, the Kapayim Center is what any child needs.

Kapayim believes illness should not shatter families. Every day, we support patients and their families in the hospitals, their homes and at our centers, so they can survive the medical crisis.
